Day 33: Spend Time with Children

Share It Please

"A child can teach an adult three things: to be happy for no reason, to always be busy with something, and to know how to demand with all his might that which he desires." - Paulo Coelho

Some people forget what it is like to be happy. Some people think of it as passe, some cliche. Some think it is cooler to be emo or depressed or demented. The essence of happiness, in its pure state, in a form that occured to us when we were kids, is gone. We just have to overanalyze everything every time and in the end, become even more depressed and dissatisfied.

I underwent this stage in my life as well, some seven years ago. Some called me galit sa mundo or anak ng dilim. I could not remember why I behaved that way but as far as I can remember, happiness was not a priority.  Professional success, maybe, but happiness? What does that even mean?

The only thing that mattered was work, everything else paled in comparison. I didn't value friendships or relationships as much. That's the reason why I do not have that much friends.

Fast forward to now, I am a convert. I am enjoying my life more. I realized that there are so many things outside of my profession -- my family, my husband, my health, my friends, my other non-work self. Don't get me wrong, I still love my job but at the end of the day, it is not the only thing that defines me. I can now be happy without a reason... Hmm. Maybe not really without a reason, but without a significant reason. Like I feel happy to be at home, lounging on the couch, doing absolutely nothing. Or playing with my dog, Sachi. Or wasting time away with the husband watching television.

This is the lesson that I learned. To be childlike. To not take things to seriously. To be sincerely happy with a simple peek-a-boo or a hide-and-seek game. No grand scheme of things. No complications. Laughing... just because.

Over the course of this happy project, I have realized that I have written quite a few posts about children. Today, I thank God for the gift of seeing the world in a child's lovely eyes.
